Special Education Support
Committed to serving the special needs of its diverse student population, LAUSD shows that support in the role of an Assistant Principal, Elementary Instructional Specialist (APEIS). La Salle's APEIS, Ms. Yalonda Peterson, serves in this role with multiple focus areas, toward helping La Salle students thrive:
- Developing collaborative general and special education instructional programs,
- Supporting teachers and staff toward meeting special education compliance obligations,
- Ensuring Individualized Education Plan (IEP) requirements are met, and IEP mandated services are delivered and monitored,
- Reviewing instruction and services to confirm that appropriate resources are provided to students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment.
La Salle Avenue Elementary offers two special education programs to meet student needs:
- A Special Day Learning class supporting students in lower grades, and
- A Resource Program for in-class support.
Our Special Day Learning class caters to students whose nature or severity of disability may impede participation in the general education program for the majority of the school day. Our Resource Program provides instructional support and services to students assigned to a general education classroom for the majority of the day. Students in the Resource Program receive services from a resource specialist teacher either in a collaborative basis with the general education classroom teacher or a learning center model.
Ms. Peterson is assisted in this comprehensive work by five special education assistants:

- Ms. Stephanie Olortegui
It is the mission of the APEIS to provide guidance and support to La Salle Avenue Elementary in order to maximize learning for all students within an inclusive environment. We strive to help all students have a sense of understanding and compassion for others.
